Chapter 10
They traversed the white concrete stairs hidden underneath a spring-loaded trap door in front of the massive fireplace. Cora had always imagined access to sewer tunnels were solely attainable through manholes in city streets. The movies popularized the idea, depicting men climbing down ladders into nearly black, water-filled passages.
This was nothing like she had ever expected. The tubular adjunct was well lit and clean, almost a smaller version of a subway tunnel. Cora imagined this was the only way in or out of Inándra’s subterranean stronghold. She was also sure that this minor tributary did not appear on any of the city maps.
Ancient beings did not live to be ancient by existing haphazardly. Nor did they become ancient by passing their daily lives among humans on normal jobs. Truly long lived creatures were never seen—ever. Over time, the memory of gods always fell from the precipice of legend into the timeless abyss of obscurity. Each truth about Inándra presented another mystery, filling Cora with more questions. Though she was still deathly afraid of her, Cora was also becoming more intrigued by Inándra’s tenuous existence.
Cora stared down at Inándra’s exquisitely pedicured bare feet. She only now realized that her toenails, which were underneath clear, ankle-deep sewer water, were coated in black.
“Are you paying attention, human?” Inándra snapped impatiently.
Cora shifted her attention back to Inándra’s face. “It’s just that I have this splitting headache all of the sudden.”
Inándra ignored Cora’s complaint. She pointed to the diagram she’d drawn on a frayed, ancient-looking blueprint and ran her index finger along the line representing the incidental sewer artery they were now standing in.
“We are here, at the mouth of this smaller tunnel leading back to my sanctuary. You’ll travel along this larger passage until you reach the second tunnel.” She emphasized the location of the tunnel by tapping on the blueprint with her index finger.
Cora flinched. “I got it.”
“Good. Follow the second tunnel to this point here and wait for me. Do not deviate from this path.” Her eyes shifted slyly from the blueprint map to Cora. “I’ll take care of the rest.”
Cora inhaled a deep breath. She wanted to vomit but she had nothing in her stomach to expel. She was jittery, nervous, anxious, afraid, and terrified. She was exhausted from the constant state of being wound so tightly.
Her right eyebrow lifted with doubt. “I’m not sure I can do this. How can you be sure this will work?”
Inándra stood in silence, seeming to measure Cora’s will to live in each breath she drew. “I’m placing my confidence in your strong will to survive. Rex will stalk you by smell alone. He won’t need to see or hear you. That is both his biggest strength and weakness.”
Cora started to open her mouth.
“Nephilim do not swim. Ever,” Inándra replied, anticipating her question.
“Your plan is to drown him? You’re telling me in all the time you’ve been alive, you never learned how to swim?”
She accepted Cora’s impudent assessment without retaliation.
Inándra said, “One of the crueler jokes perpetrated by the old gods.
